IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES READY TO DIG DEEP, FIGHT BACK IN FACE OF SECOND TRUMP TERM

"We know the next four years will challenge us, but they will not break us."

NASHVILLE—  Today, Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States of America.

The following is a statement from Lisa Sherman Luna, Executive Director at the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition:

“Donald Trump's election–after months of threatening to uproot immigrant families, peddling baseless lies and conspiracy theories about our communities, and leaning into white supremacist tropes–is another sad stain in our nation’s troubled path toward a multiracial democracy. The plans Donald Trump has promised will make every community less safe: from ending birthright citizenship and threatening current immigration pathways to gutting humanitarian systems of protection and revoking long-standing immigrants’ status to separating immigrant families, crippling our nation’s workforce, and pitting neighbors against each other.

We know the next four years will challenge us, but they will not break us. Many immigrant Tennesseans left everything they know to make a better life for their families in our state and are more resilient than Donald Trump could ever imagine. We've been building power and preparing for this moment for more than 20 years, and our members are ready to organize their families, defend their rights, and challenge these dangerous policies at every step. We're ready to dig deep, fight back, and use every tool in our toolbox to make sure that Tennessee’s immigrant and refugee community has the freedom to thrive and live with dignity.”

The Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) is a statewide, immigrant and refugee-led collaboration whose mission is to build power, amplify our voices, and organize communities to advocate for our rights in order to build a stronger, more inclusive Tennessee where people of all nationalities, immigration statuses, and racial identities can belong and thrive. Since its founding in 2001, TIRRC has grown from a grassroots network of community leaders into one of the most diverse and effective coalitions of its kind, a model for emerging immigrant rights organizations in the Southeast and throughout the United States.
